Transferable skills…we ALL have them, the hard part is identifying them and communicating them to a potential employer. Take physicians for example.  We have a boatload of “soft” skills that we take for granted and are required to take care of patients. These skills include the following:

·      Leadership skills: running an office-based practice, leading a clinical team on rounds

·      Communication skills: communicating with peers, patients, and family members

·      Collaborating: working together with other healthcare professionals to provide necessary care

·      Interpreting complex data

·      Complex problem-solving

·      Comprehending peer-reviewed medical literature

·      Teaching: patients, family members, residents, students

Typically, these skills are left off of a CV. This is yet another reason why having a resume is critical. A resume gives you the opportunity to list these important skills and further highlight why you are a great fit for the job you are applying for. As an applicant the burden falls on you to convince the employer of your value. I promise you are worth way more than you realize. The next step if identifying your skills and writing them down on a resume. Make sure these skills align with the job you are applying for. For instance, my three years working as a Medicare Medical Director for a health insurance company makes me a utilization management expert. If I am applying for a job within the utilization management industry, I will be certain to list this as one of my highlighted skills.
