Physicians often ask me how they can increase their chances of getting a non-clinical job. Transitioning from full-time clinical practice to a non-clinical gig can be challenging. Here are some suggestions to bolster your resume and increase your chances of getting an interview:
· Take on administrative roles with your current practice or hospital. These could include joining the pharmacy & therapeutics (P&T) or utilization management committees or taking on an additional role as the Vice President of Medical Affairs.
· Become a medical director for your current practice or chairperson for your department. This helps you gain valuable leadership skills and people management experience that are essential for nearly all non-clinical jobs.
· Find part-time work as a physician advisor or reviewing medical director within the utilization management (health insurance) industry. Many of these jobs with insurers are full-time, but not all of them. Part-time opportunities are also common with Independent Review Organization (IROs). IROs are third-party organizations that provide objective medical reviews of healthcare services. You can find a list of these companies on the National Association of Independent Review Organization (NAIRO) website: https://lnkd.in/gY6ArReZ
If you feel restless or stuck, these are great opportunities to strengthen your resume and help you land a non-clinical job.
