Networking...it's more than cheap wine and awkward conversation.

I absolutely hated "networking". It seemed like a colossal waste of time, uncomfortable, and one-sided. When I heard that word all I could think of was a group of people standing around at a conference wearing name tags, drinking cheap beer and wine, and forcing awkward conversation.

That all changed for me within the past year. I first learned the value of networking from a physician leadership development course that my employer offers. I had the opportunity to meet, and learn from, several other physicians who work in different lines of business within the same company. I was also paired with a physician executive mentor who helped me clearly my identify my career goals and how to successfully navigate the business (or corporate) world. He showed me the value of networking, even within my own company.

Since completing this program I have fully embraced networking in my life. Now I always do my best to answer emails and direct messages and take those phone calls that I used to avoid. One of the coolest things about my side hustle helping physicians find non-clinical work is networking with amazing individuals. Without this I would not have met people like Patrick O'Malley, Dana Corriel, MD, and Gregory Schwaid, DO, MPH, FAOCOPM.

Don't be like I used to be. Don't be afraid to network and put yourself out there. Sure it's a bit awkward at first but it gives you the opportunity to meet incredible people you would have otherwise never met. Your network also gives you the opportunity to help others. There is a reason that bestselling author Tim Sanders said "Your network if your net worth." It's time for you to start building up your net worth.
